2007 Perth Festival Sponsorship

The Perth International Arts Festival is the oldest and largest festival of its kind in Australia. Every year, the Festival brings music, theatre, dance and film from around the world to the people of Western Australia.

Over the past four years, PerthWeb has provided web site design, development and hosting services to the Festival as a major sponsor. Over this time, the web site has grown from a novelty to an essential part of the Festival’s marketing efforts, as more and more people look to the world wide web for access to information. The 2004-2005 Perth Festival web site was a finalist in the 2005 WA Web Awards, in the not-for-profit category, showing just how well it was performing.

While working at PerthWeb, Kay Smoljak of Clever Starfish was instrumental in looking after the Festival’s often unique web requirements, building a relationship with the Festival staff over the years. We’re pleased to announce that for the 2007 Perth Festival, Clever Starfish will be joining PerthWeb as a major sponsor in a co-branding arrangement, allowing us both to continue our ongoing interest in making the Perth Festival web site bigger, better and brighter than ever before.

The 2007 Festival runs from 9 February to 4 March. The program will be launched in November, and we look forward to the unveiling of the new web site at that time. See you at the Festival!

Screen Goddess Calendar

The IT Screen Goddess Calendar 2006-2007 is the brainchild of IT visionary Sonja Bernhardt. Featuring 20 amazing IT women of all shapes and ages in classic screen goddess poses, the calendar aims to smash the nerd stereotype and profile real women who work in technology. Proceeds from sale of the calendar will go to organisations promoting IT careers to women and girls.

The project has not been without controversy, however. The Australian Computer Society objected to the cover shot which showed Brisbane IT Manager Sonja, naked but for some strategic rose petals in a parody of American Beauty, and publicly withdrew their support. Debate raged across web sites, newspapers, radio and even television – bringing the issue of the decline in the number of women in technology careers to the public eye in spectacular fashion.

With the full-blown media frenzy starting many weeks before anticipated, the Screen Goddess web site needed to be completed in record time. Clever Starfish Kay joined the team of volunteers to implement the automated payment gateway, but ended up helping to bring the design to standards-compliant life.

The calendar will be launched Australia-wide on August 11, a significant date in IT history: on this day in 1942, movie star Hedy Lamarr was awarded the patent for spread spectrum, the technology behind today’s mobile telecommunications.

InstallAware home page rework

InstallAware is a leading MSI installer product – an important item in every Windows software developer’s toolkit. With large companies like Macrovision as major competitors, InstallAware needed a home page that was memorable and clearly outlined the different product editions available.

For this project, we worked closely with InstallAware founder and CEO Sinan Karaca to design and implement a fresh new look for the home page. As well as adding visual appeal, a main aim was to allow visitors to easily distinguish between the three main editions – accomplished by displaying an image of each edition alongside a list of the main features at the top of the new design.

By using industry-standard best practices for web site development, we were also able to decrease the average time the home page took to load by more than two-thirds – from over a minute for users on dialup connections to less than 20 seconds. This will help to minimise customer frustration as well as reduce hosting costs for InstallAware.

The Clever Starfish team will continue to work with InstallAware in the future on search engine optimisation and online marketing efforts.
